Draw the ocean
Personal project

This personal project was originally designed for a call for illustration made by the “Fondation de la mer” and “Fondation Glenat”. They were looking for an original illustration on the theme of the necessary and vital protection of the oceans.
Unfortunately the contest was later cancelled but I had really enjoyed working on the project and wanted to share it anyway!
The final illustration
The idea for this illustration came to me while watching a documentary on the subject. I saw this image, which shocked me, of an old fishing net in which a turtle skeleton was held prisoner.
I immediately knew that this was the effect that I wanted to reach with my illustration. Today, we are confronted with so many images and videos that to get people’s attention and keep it, you need a strong image. Something they will remember.
I decided to create a contrast between the beauty of life and its progressive destruction: a sea turtle whose head is no more than a skull; colorful corals that turn white and weak due to stress (pollution, etc.); fishes that are replaced by plastic bags...
The goal for me is clear: we have let things go way too far. People need to realize that we are all partly responsible for the current state of the oceans and that it is essential to reduce our use of plastic and other polluting elements as well as the consumption of certain fish.
Final  illustration and text mock-up
I hope that this illustration provokes an emotion in everyone who sees it. I hope to make an impression, to shock people and to contribute to changing the situation in the right direction by encouraging each individual to make efforts on their own scale.
